Commission Work
CUI YING LONG - THE DRAGON
This highly decorative embroidery is of a female mythological dragon with an almost
three-dimensional body that harmonises with a watery ornamental background.
The background details are all based on Chinese symbols and were worked separately
and applied to the dyed stencilled fabric. The Dragon body was also worked in separate
pieces and applied to the finished background fabric. A wide variety of fabrics were used,
a silk and linen fabric, felt, semi-transparent fabrics, silks, beads, real gold leaf onto
handmade paper all combined with many different machine embroidery threads, and some hand-stitching.
The completed embroidery was framed in a purpose built Perspex frame to allow maximum viewing.
Museum of Reading Triptych
The Triptych was my final degree piece and is owned by Outreach the Educational
loan service of the Museum of Reading.
Three wall hangings, each measuring 50 x 60 cms, are based on the main elements
of Reading Abbey ruin, the Waterhouse Town Mill and the adjoining Museum and Art
Gallery buildings.
The three panels are made from a wide range of fabrics, including felt, silks,
metallic silks, and semi-transparent fabrics which were layered, stitched and in
some areas cut back to reveal the colours underneath. The stitching is a combination
of straight machine stitching, free machine embroidery, automatic stitched patterns
as well as some hand embroidery using a wide variety of machine embroidery threads
and hand-stitching silk threads.
Some areas were stuffed to give a three-dimensional look, together with a wide selection
of dyes. All of the images were completed seperately and then applied to the dyed silk,
and linen background fabric.
Each panel is framed in it's own purpose-made Perspex box to give maximum viewing to the
worked pieces.
